Zolani Mahola was born on 19th July, 1981 in Bhisho, South Africa.

Zolani Mahola studied at Trinity High School (St. Dominic’s Priory School). Mahola pursued drama at the University of Cape Town.

In 2002, Zolani and other musicians formed Freshlyground. She was described as one of South Africa’s best and most inspiring young singers after releasing their second album. At the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Freshlyground performed the song “Waka Waka” together with Shakira in the opening and closing ceremonies. Zolani played a role in the SABC1 TV drama Tsha-Tsha. She voiced the character of Zoe in the animated feature film, Zambezia and also recorded the song “Get Up” for the original motion picture soundtrack.

Mahola was among eight women honoured by the South African division of Glamour at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards 2011. Together with her bandmate, they were declared “The Icons” of South African women in 2011.
